WHAT’S THE BOOK ABOUT?

Everybody loves a contest.  The thrill of competing in something that may earn you a prize is exciting!  In this little kingdom, King Sow, the young ruler, decrees a Special Contest.  What is different about this contest is that the prize is a secret!  The three main characters, Page Sheep, Lady Spider and Peddler Fox decide to enter the contest anyway.  Each has to search within to find out what they can give.  They have their doubts, but determine their strengths.  Well, all, except Peddler Fox.  He has other ideas. They each find out what the Special Secret Prize is, according to the contribution they make. In the end, a vital life lesson is learned.

“The Contest” reminds me of the classical stories I read as a child. I have this book in my pre-school classroom and the children enjoy it every time it’s read. They enjoy looking at the illustrations and hearing of the three main characters’ discoveries about themselves. As a teacher, this book enables me to introduce the importance that everyone has a unique talent.

LOOKING WITHIN

King Sow’s little kingdom was ablaze with worry.

“Baron Owl,” roared the children, “Tell us again what you saw last night!”

“Hoot! Hoot! Hoot!” cried Baron Owl. “Everyone quiet!”

A swift hush fell as everyone strained to hear Baron Owl.

“I was keeping watch as I do night after night. I suddenly saw a rather unsettling sight - Yellow fiery eyes on the darkest of nights; Long, sharp, curved claws, ready to pounce; Stretched, wiry whiskers to find the way; A tail more than half the length of head and body!”

“A mountain lion!” exclaimed Peddler Fox. “A mountain lion, here in our kingdom!”

The children and animals all shouted at once:

“It’s going to hunt each shadowy night - hoping to snatch young deer or good ol’ Sheep!”

“It’s going to crawl up the largest of trees and frighten each feeding baby bird!”
